After the tragic death of Corporal Scott Severns, his family faced a tough decision on where to lay him to rest.  Scott's mother and father expressed the need to have a place where officers could be buried together.  They realized that if their family had to face this difficult decision, that many others will also face the same situation.

Many people do not "preplan" for death.  In fact most of us never give it a second thought until tragedy strikes.  For the most part, we are never prepared to go through something like this emotionally, much less financially.  After taking all this into consideration, Southlawn Cemetery was contacted and agreed to meet.  They graciously volunteered to donate a special section in their cemetery for all St. Joseph County, Mishawaka, South Bend, and Sate Police Officers and their families.  This special section will be called the "Heroes Section" and will be in honor of Scott Severns.

This Heroes Section will provide spaces for active and retired police officers, and a special monument will be erected for our fallen hero's.  Southlawn Cemetery has agreed to provide a free space to any officer, active or retired, that would like to participate.  Spaces for immediate family members can also be purchased next to the officer at a reduced rate.  The family put together a committee consisting of a group of law enforcement officers within St. Joseph County shortly after Scott's death to insure that a Heroes Section would be built in his honor.  This Memorial Section will be a place where the community can come and honor "All Heroes" for their hard work and dedication.
